If you have never had a psychiatric evaluation, you may wonder what to expect.
A psychiatric evaluation is an opportunity for the provider to develop a more complete understanding of what you are experiencing.
Your provider may ask about:
- Your current symptoms
- When the symptoms began
- How symptoms affect daily life
- Previous mental health treatment
- Current and previous medications
- Medical history
- Family psychiatric history
- Sleep
- Appetite
- Energy
- Concentration
- Substance use
- Major life events or stressors
- Trauma history when clinically relevant
- Social and occupational functioning
- Safety concerns
The goal is not simply to assign a diagnosis.
A comprehensive evaluation helps the provider understand your symptoms, identify possible contributing factors, consider alternative explanations, and determine appropriate treatment recommendations.
